What is Moore's Law? Are robots taking over the world?

The observation made in 1965 by Gordon Moore, co-founder of Intel, that the number of transistors per square inch on integrated circuitshad doubled every year since the integrated circuit was invented. Moore predicted that this trend would continue for the foreseeable future source
We are all aware that computers are getting faster and (relatively) cheaper with each passing year. The phones we carry in our pockets are far more powerful than the ones that sent the Apollo astronauts to the Moon.

What is under appreciated is the impact this exponential increase is having as we move approach half a century of the integrated circuit - fascinating discussion about this on the BBC In Business Podcast - Race Against the Machine (March 30).
